Who do you people think "invented" heavy-metal:

Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, or... The Beatles... ?

Just kidding about the third band. Or am I? Tum-tum-tuumm!

I knew someone in college who claimed that the Beatles were
the first metal band. I say they're a progenitor at best.

My vote is Black Sabbath over Led Zeppelin, but there were
more obscure bands that might have beaten BS to the punch.

Same. But I would credit LZ for "inventing" hard rock ;).

To my knowledge, Blue Cheer's version of the old Eddie Cochran
classic, "Summertime Blues", constitutes the first really
"metallic" song. There were many progenitors, but (IMHO) Blue
Cheer spawned the first METAL song.
I ALMOST brought up SB specifically... In some ways it really
IS the first metal song in the public eye. But was it truly
metal?

Did MC5 beat them to the punch? I don't remember the exact
years.

I almost said that too, but I don't think that's true exactly.
Where do the Amboy Dukes fit in, for example? Or Iron Butterfly?
Anyone know Madrake Root? What about Screaming Lord Sutch??

Back in the 80's, The Kinks claimed to be the first metal band because
Van Halen covered "You Really Got Me." According to that logic, Roy
Orbison was the first metal artist because Van Halen also covered "Oh
Pretty Woman." Likewise, Martha and the Vandellas would be first
because Van Halen covered "Dancing In The Street."

thanks to everyone for the input. I myself consider Black Sabbath the
originators, specifically Iron Man. But obviously there can't be a specific
band who gets the credit, or (to be p. correct) we'd have to give it to the
first primitive man who knocked his club against a rock, thus creating the
first musical "thump".

Heavy Metal was not invented.
It was a progression.
Ground roots were laid by The Who and maybe the Kinks.
Jimi Hendrix and Cream too in the 60's.
Sabbath and Led Zep and Deep Purple and Grand Funk Rail Road And Blue Oyster
Cult in the late 60's early 70's chipped in also.
other bands such as Blue cheer, Iron Butterfly Steppenwolf were there too.

Clearly if you look at the riffs, antiques, and guitar worship it was HENDRIX

Black Sabbath's debut really has too many riffs from Led Zeppelin 1 to
be taken seriously

yes but even Hendrix must have had others who influenced him. we could
possibly trace this to the primordial ooze. Or maybe God. Who influenced
God? God made heavy metal and the devil stole it. mheh.
